FROM THE HIGHWAY / LU KE YU DAO KE
WITH Peter Yang-Qun • Ingrid Hu • Tsui Fu-Sheng • Suen Yuet • Lee Hung • Yeung Fui-Yuk • Lee Man-Tai
DIRECTED BY Chang Tseng-Chai
The rise of kung fu was presaged in the new school wuxia era by Cathay studio’s marvellous production ‘FROM THE HIGHWAY’ (LU KE YU DAO KE,1970), directed by Chang Tseng-chai. The film is set in the northern Chinese plains during the early republican era and features a hero who fights only with his hands. The hero’s main adversary is a ban-dit leader whose favorite weapon is his bald head, which he uses as abattering ram; another villain uses his pigtail as a whip. Obviously, the notion of “real fighting” in FROM THE HIGHWAY cannot be taken too literally, but must be grasped as cinematic representations of violence and fighting techniques based on Chinese folklore. This landmark film marked a turning point in the new school martial arts cinema being the first full-colour martial arts film to depict unarmed combat styles.
